This Grace Lenten study examines The Meaning of Mary Magdalene: Discovering the Woman at the Heart of Christianity by Cynthia Bourgeault. At one level, the book explores the real Mary Magdalene, going beyond the stereotypes and innuendo that have been spread by the church for many years. But there’s more, much more! Bourgeault looks at the relationships between Mary Magdalene, Jesus, and the original disciples revealed in the Nag Hammadi finds and other recently discovered documents. She also examines the paths of wisdom and inner transformation of early Christianity in terms relevant to spiritual development in today’s world. The book provides a challenging perspective of the Christian experience from a Wisdom, non-dualistic, and Contemplative viewpoint. Although to some degree an academic book, it is quite readable and should lead to some interesting discussions during the study sessions.
